My Teacher is Dead Naming Me: What to Do

Wearing name tags in class may not always help.

You are getting deadnamed when you experience a situation where your teacher (or your fellow classmates) refers to you by the name (and gender pronouns) before you transitioned or the name given to you at birth.

You are not alone, and while it sucks, deadnaming is actually common. This blog article can tell you exactly what to do next.

Validate Yourself First

You are likely to feel like you do not matter at first. Feeling like you do not matter gets you down, which can be dangerous.

So, here’s what you should do instead. Think of something or someone that validates you. You, for example, validate yourself every day you wake up, so that’s a great place to start. Next, you can probably count enough people you know who call you by your name; they also validate you.

Tell Your Teacher How It Feels

I can tell you, it is your teacher’s responsibility to call your name correctly, but when this isn’t happening, you will have to step up. It requires courage, but you can do it.

So, picture this scenario; it’s just minutes to the end of the last period, and everyone’s gathering their stuff to head out.

Take a few deep, calming breaths and prepare the first few lines for your teacher. You’re going to start off with a polite ask for a few minutes of their time, and then you describe how their deadnaming makes you feel.

Wrap up your talk by asking your teacher if they can help you by addressing you correctly next time.

You need to hear them commit to this for the next time they’re addressing you in class. Hearing you describe how their behavior makes you feel will likely make it conscious to your teacher. Deadnaming can sometimes be an honest omission or mistake, and having this honest chat with your teacher usually helps.

If Having a Chat with your Teacher Does Not Work…

We can all agree that sometimes the deadnaming that you experience is conscious and deliberate.

If this is the case, a chat with your teacher will likely not work. You have to take it up with the school authorities or have your guidance counselor do so on your behalf.

You’ve already tried your best by stating how their behavior makes you feel. You’ll need to take it further so that someone else adds their voice with yours, insisting that your name be used to address you in the classroom.

Let’s Wrap This Up…

It will be tough. As you read earlier, this issue of deadnaming is common. But, you can easily bypass the negative emotions they cause you to feel when you understand that something can be done to stop it.

I hope this helps!
